Tour participants will visit the Miraflores Locks, the foremost set of locks along the Pacific side of the Panama Canal. You’ll watch barges and cruise ships pass through this 60-foot (18-m), two-step lock. It’s fascinating to watch the massive ships enter and leave locks.
You will also visit Casco Viejo in Panama City, which was built in 1673 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. In Casco Viejo you’ll enjoy a walking tour through the neighborhood, which is made up of Spanish colonial buildings, 17th-century churches, and quaint outdoor cafés.
You will also explore the Causeway, a strip of land that links three small islands near the entrance to the Panama Canal. The U.S. Army once used this area to defend the Panama Canal, but these days the Causeway has become one of the trendiest parts of Panama City. It has nice walking areas and is scattered with good restaurants, bars, and shops.
This tour departs daily at 8:00 a.m. It departs from Playa Blanca at 7:00 a.m.
Attraction Visited
The Panama Canal is one of the world’s most impressive engineering feats. The canal extends 80 kilometers (50 mi) from Panama City on the Pacific Ocean to Colón on the Caribbean Sea. It’s built at one of the lowest and narrowest points in Panama, and runs right through the Continental Divide. More than 14,000 ships pass through the canal annually, carrying some 300 million tons of cargo. As such, the Panama Canal is one of the largest generators of income for Panama—in 2011, the canal generated $800 million, some two percent of the country’s GDP.
