This tour begins on the edge of Gamboa. After tour participants board the boat, you’ll head up the Chagres River before entering Lake Gatún in the Panama Canal. At 165 square miles (425 square km), Lake Gatún is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world. As your boat works its way through the lake, you’ll visit several islands where you may be able to see white-faced capuchin and howler monkeys, as well as numerous bird species.

As such, the Panama Canal is one of the largest generators of income for Panama—in 2011, the canal generated $800 million, some two percent of the country’s GDP.
